Workshop on Future Energy Systems

What is the fast way to the future’s energy system with lower CO2 emissions?

to be held 19 - 20 November 2008 at DTU in Lyngby

In the coming years, energy systems will be changed to a combination of central units and a number of smaller decentralized units – to a large extent based on renewable energy or other local and industry based energy production.
At the same time there will be a tight coupling between energy production and end user with extensive use of information- and communication technology.

The workshop raises the pressing question:
How could the future energy system be developed toward lower CO2 emissions on the basis of known low CO2 energy technologies?

The workshop will assess the perspectives for a rapid development of energy systems with more renewable energy in order to reduce the CO2 emissions. The workshop will further give recommendations for the implementation of such energy systems. The recommendations will be targeted for the research community, the industry and public authori-ties. The recommendations will include opportunities for synergy in order to create greater innovation power and market enterprise.

Risø Energy Report 7 will be presented as introduction to the workshop by a number of the authors. The rest of the workshop alternates between presentations and working groups on the global energy situation, the European perspective and conclusions for the consequences for Denmark. The workshop will deal with aspects of research, technology, industry and regulation through presentations, working groups and discussions in plenum.

We invite participants from research institutes at the forefront of technology, companies with a track record of in-volvement in developing new technology in partnership with others, and both Danish and international governmental consultants.

Reporting from the workshop
A report from the workshop will be prepared and used as input for the final high level conference on 19 September 2009, where DTU will present a summary of climate change technology solutions and viewpoints.

The workshop takes place at DTU Campus, Auditorium 13, building 308, Richard Petersens Plads, 2800 Lyngby, Denmark.

Working language
The working language is English and no translation will be provided.

Background
The workshop is a part of DTU Climate Change Technologies
DTU Climate Change Technologies is a research programme run by the Technical University of Denmark. Its primary objective is to provide a firm platform from which to develop and apply new technological solutions to climate change issues. Focusing on climate change and energy generation, the programme seeks to create and test technologies which reduce CO2 emissions and can support industrial production and welfare in adapting to climate changes.

As a part of the programme The Technical University of Denmark has arranged a series of workshops and confe-rences on energy and climate change technology. The focus will be on technologies that are quick to develop and ap-ply. DTUs aim is to promote co-operation between universities, industries and governments and speed up the adoption of technologies and energy systems. The workshops will lead to practical research and development programmes and partnerships.

Risø Energy Report series
Risø Energy Report 7 will be released as introduction to the workshop. This series deals with global, regional and na-tional perspectives on current and future energy issues.

Risø Energy Report 7 “Future low carbon energy systems” takes its point of reference in the recommendations from the IPCC in 2007. IPCC states that if anticipated climate change is to remain in the order of 2 to 3 degrees over the next century then the world’s CO2 emissions must peak within the next 10 – 15 years and ultimately by the middle of the century be reduced to app. 50% of present level.

The report presents status and trends for the energy systems in a Danish, European and OECD perspective. Status and perspectives for the large rapidly growing developing country economies like India and China is also presented, as well as for typical least developed countries e.g. in Africa. A special focus is put on how future energy development and systems might be composed in these three country groupings, and to which extent the different technologies might contribute.

The report further identifies system options and technology mixes that can lead to the emissions peak in 2020 and 50% reduction in the long run at the Danish and Global level.
