GE to double wind turbine deliveries to China

General Electric Co. has indicated about its plans to double wind turbine deliveries in China over the next two years.

This projection has been filed by the Shanghai Daily.

GE’s environmental product campaign head Steve Fludder noted GE hopes to increase wind turbine shipments to 320 units in 2009, up from 159 units of last year. The company also aims to double the amount to 600 units by 2010.

China, the fifth-largest producer of wind power, may buoy GE’s renewable-energy sales after larger markets in the US and Europe were hurt by the global credit crunch, Fludder reportedly said.

Last month, A-Power Energy Generation Systems and GE Drivetrain Technologies, a unit of GE Transportation, announced two Letters of Intent, one for GE to supply A-Power with 2.7 MW wind turbine gearboxes, beginning in 2010, and the second to establish a Joint Venture partnership for a wind turbine gearbox assembly plant. The joint venture will bring a multi-megawatt gearbox capacity to China and serve as GE Drivetrain Technologies’ Southeast Asia manufacturing center from which it will serve its customers in the region beginning mid-2010.

Suzlon utilizes solar energy to power wind farm site operations in Maharashtra

Wind turbine manufacturer Suzlon Energy has established a wind farm site to utilize solar energy to power site operations in Adwadi, Nasik in Maharashtra.

As most wind farms are located in remote and often underdeveloped regions, small back-up diesel generators are sometimes needed for basic requirements at the site offices. Working to cut down even these minimal carbon emissions, Suzlon has undertaken a pilot project to power a project site office with solar power.

The project features 20 photovoltaic panels supplied by Tata BP Solar that provide power to the site office as well as the project yard. It eliminates the need for generator sets, eliminating diesel and oil consumption, emissions and providing long term cost savings.

Rohit Modi, president of India business for Suzlon Energy India, said: "At Suzlon, we realize the importance of social responsibility and environmental integrity. This project is another step forward in our commitment to powering a greener, emission free future, and we aim to replicate this initiative across our sites in the country."

Global wind energy capacity grew by 28.8 percent in 2008

Global wind energy capacity grew by 28.8 percent last year to reach total global installations of more than 120.8 GW at the end of 2008, according to Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).

Over 27 GW of new wind power generation capacity came online in 2008, 36 percent more than in 2007.

"These figures speak for themselves: there is huge and growing global demand for emissions-free wind power, which can be installed quickly, virtually everywhere in the world. Wind energy is the only power generation technology that can deliver the necessary cuts in CO2 in the critical period up to 2020, when greenhouse cases must peak and begin to decline to avoid dangerous climate change," said Steve Sawyer, Secretary General of GWEC.

"The 120 GW of global wind capacity in place at the end of 2008 will produce 260 TWh and save 158 million tons of CO2 every year."

The leading markets in terms of new installed capacity in 2008 were the US and China. New US wind energy installations totalled 8,358 MW for a total installed capacity of 25,170 MW and the US has now officially overtaken Germany (23,902 MW) as number one in wind power. Europe and North America are running neck-to-neck, with about 8.9 GW each of new installed capacity in 2008, with Asia closely following with 8.6 GW.

The massive growth in the US wind market in 2008 increased the nation's total wind power generating capacity by 50 percent. The new wind projects completed in 2008 account for about 42 percent of the entire new power-producing capacity added in the US last year, and created 35,000 new jobs, for a total of 85,000 employed in the sector in the US.

Close to a third of all new capacity in 2008 was installed on the Asian continent. In particular, the wind energy boom is continuing in China, which once again doubled its installed capacity by adding about 6.3 GW, reaching a total of 12.2 GW.

"The Chinese wind energy market is going from strength to strength, and has once again doubled in size compared to 2007, reaching over 12 GW of total installed capacity," said Shi Pengfei, VP, Chinese Wind Energy Association (CWEA).

RISO-PhD student position – High temperature alkaline electrolyser cells

Do you want to help develop innovative and environmentally friendly technologies for the future?

Electrochemical cells have the potential to play a crucial role in the energy sector of a sustainable society in electricity generation (as fuel cells) and in hydrogen production (as electrolysers). The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risø National Laboratory, Technical University of Denmark, is developing new cell types as well as studying fundamental aspects of electrochemical cells for energy conversion. The aim is to significantly extend our understanding of the materials limitations which currently impede a widespread commercialization of the technology.

The project
The PhD project is a part of a larger Danish R&D project on alkaline electrolyser cell with partners from industry and other institutes. The objective of the PhD study is to identify the potential for improving the efficiency and decreasing the costs associated with alkaline electrolysis of water to hydrogen by increasing the operation pressure and temperature of the electrolyser. New improved (more efficient and more stable) electrode materials will be investigated as a possibility for both improving the efficiency and decreasing the costs. The specific experimental activities during the PhD study will be the construction of a test set-up for the electrochemical characterization of electrodes and cells of the alkaline type. Subsequently, durability test will be performed. The electrodes will be characterized using electron microscopy both as fabricated and post mortem in order to find the degradation mechanisms.

RISO Wants Master degree Holders - to do Phd in solid state electrochemistry

Do you want to help develop innovative and environmentally friendly energy technologies for the future?

The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risø DTU is among the world’s research leaders in solid oxide fuel cells – a technology for clean and efficient production of electricity. In addition we have activities within a number of related topics in functional ceramics, including electrochemical flue gas purification.

Harmful emissions from Diesel fired engines are an increasing environmental problem. While three-way catalytic converters are efficient in removing pollutants from exhaust gasses from petrol fired engines, problems still remain for Diesel engines. An attractive possibility is to use electrochemical cells to remove the NOx and soot. We have recently been granted a major project from the Danish Council for Strategic Research which will address the key issues needed to bring the technology to a proof-of-concept state.

Project description
The aim of the PhD project is to develop new electrode materials for a ceramic electrochemical cell for flue gas purification. Topics include:

synthesis and structural characterization of novel electrode materials, using e.g. X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis
electrical and electrochemical characterization using conductivity measurements, cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy
test and characterization of cells using scanning electron microscopy and mass spectrometry
