Is Britain ready for huge increase in wind power?

Around 400,000 new employment opportunities are expected in a massive expansion of renewable energy as Britain strives to meet two demanding climate change targets. The plan is to cut the UK’s carbon emissions by 34% on 1990 levels by 2020 and derive 15% of all energy from renewable sources by the same date.

The British government is set to share its “The UK Low Carbon Transition Plan” and Renewable Energy Strategy, setting out how Britain plans to meet a European Union target of getting 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.

“What we’re trying to set out on Wednesday (July 15) ... is a route map, ...a sense of how do we go from here to 2020 and beyond,” Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband told the BBC.

As per the strategy paper, Britain needs to spend more than £100 billion on renewable energy infrastructure by 2020 (including 7,000 wind turbines).

A new report has indicated that Britain’s energy system is already capable of taking a large amount of wind power.

Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, RSPB and WWF, who commissioned the report, are calling on the UK Government to put in place funding and incentives to encourage investment in much more wind power and to grant priority access to the energy market and the electricity grid.

It highlighted that the National Grid is more than able to manage the variable input created by wind power, as it is already designed to manage fluctuations in demand and supply. The report shows that there is no technical reason why a significant amount of energy generated by wind cannot be used to supply the National Grid.

A section of the media has also highlighted that the government’s plans to concentrate on wind power is a challenging task.

Taregna in Bihar best place to see solar eclipse: NASA


PATNA: More than a thousand years after astronomer Aryabhatta (or Aryabhatha, 476-550 AD) set up a camp to study movement of stars, all roads

lead to the same Taregna village this year to witness the total solar eclipse, the longest in the 21st century, on Wednesday.

'Taregna', the name of the village about 30 kms south of Bihar capital Patna, has a startling phonetic similarity with 'tare ginna', the Hindi equivalent of 'counting of stars'.

The village, adjudged the best place to view the celestial phenomena by the NASA, was expected to host about two lakh scientists, researchers and 'astro-tourists' from across the globe to witness the eclipse.

The duration of the eclipse in Taregna will be 3 minutes 48 seconds. However, the maximum duration of the eclipse would be six minutes 38 seconds, as visible from the Pacific Ocean.

Divisional Commissioner Sunil Barthwal said the state government would provide the visitors with all facilities.

The scientists said they would be studying atmospheric ionization, geomagnetism, asteroids, animals and avian behavioural changes as well as impact on micro-organisms during, before and after the eclipse.

The scientists were also expected to discover asteroids, which existed only in the world of hypothesis, they said.

Most of the rooms in the hotels in Patna have been booked in advance by the scientists, researchers and tourists. Teams of experts from Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE), a Delhi based NGO, and NASA, are also reaching here, officials said.

The Patna planetarium is receiving heavy rush for buying special spectacles at Rs 20 per piece as people don't want to miss the opportunity, sources said.

Tour operators have made special arrangements to cash in on this occasion and have already received a overwhelming response.

Cox and Kings, the reputed travel agency, has claimed that a group of both amateur astronomers and others have booked a Boeing-737 for the two-hour journey from Delhi to Gaya in Bihar, specially to watch the solar eclipse which will begin at 5.30 am and last for about two hours.

But there is also a cloud of uncertainty. Scientists were concerned about the visibility of the cosmic event as it is monsoon and whether the horizon would be cloud free during the time of the eclipse, just after sunrise, in Indian locations like Taregna.

According to legends, Taregna had a camp set up by Aryabhatta to watch the celestial bodies. He was probably in Patliputra when he wrote 'Aryabhatiya', his lone work to survive, containing his theories on mathematics and astronomy. The first Indian satellite, launched on April 19, 1975, from erstwhile Soviet Union, was named after the great astronomer.

21st century's longest Total Solar Eclipse on 2009 July 22



The solar eclipse that will take place on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 will be a total eclipse of the Sun with a magnitude of 1.080 that will be visible from a narrow corridor through northern India, eastern Nepal, northern Bangladesh, Bhutan, and the northern tip of Myanmar, central China and the Pacific Ocean, including the Ryukyu Islands, Marshall Islands and Kiribati. Totality will be visible in many cities such as Surat, Varanasi, Patna, Thimphu, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Hangzhou and Shanghai, as well as over the Three Gorges Dam. A partial eclipse will be seen from the much broader path of the Moon's penumbra, including most of South East Asia and north-eastern Oceania. This solar eclipse is the longest total solar eclipse that will occur in the twenty-first century, and will not be surpassed in duration until June 13, 2132. Totality will last for up to 6 minutes and 39 seconds, with the maximum eclipse occurring in the ocean at 02:35:21 UTC about 100 km south of the Bonin Islands, southeast of Japan. The North Iwo Jima island is the landmass with totality time closest to maximum.




The eclipse quake theory is as follows, When the gravitational force of the sun and moon are both pulling on a plate that has not had series of recent earth quakes, the extra pull is all that is needed to "pop the seam" and cause a major quake.

6+ Magnitude Quake on July 22 2009 at 3:00PM Local Japanese time. This will be follower by two level 5+ Earthquakes and a Tsunami between 5:00PM and 7:00PM. The tsunami will start out in the pacific ocean (to the South East of Japan ... Along the fault line) and hit all the islands to the south west of Japan, Indonesia and even reach New Zealand. The major quakes will actually be along the fault lines in the Ocean.

the theory that the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon pulling together will do the following things.
1. Lift the tectonic plates
2. Cause the tide to rise more than usual
3. Cause an underground molten magma tide to dip and raise the plates following the water tide.

Taken all the time data from the Nasa eclipse site into an excel spread sheet four the four tectonic plates in the region. assumed an hour delay for each event following the lunar eclipse, and then summed the values. I assumed that the events would last longer for the fluids, water and molten magma than for dry land. and then summed the values four all 4 plates where Japan sits.
The blue path above shows the lunar path that will achieve the full solar eclipse at around 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Red dots show where the solar eclipse will be full.

The theory is based on gravitation pull and the earth's tectonic plates

A solar eclipse means that the moon is blocking the sun. The moon has enough gravitational pull to cause the tides an other natural phenomena on earth. The sun has enough gravitational pull to keep the earth in orbit. The theory is that during a solar eclipse, the moon has the Sun's added pull on the earth's tectonic plates. When the Sun and Moon are together on one side of the planet, they pull together and lift up the earth's tectonic plate, just beneath the eclipse. This causes the plate to shift upward, and then an earth quake when the lifted plate gets the little extra push (lift) it needed to move over its neighboring plate. The theory may be hair brained, or it might actually have some pull to it. (pun intended) I'd like to do a simulator game to find out.

The closest thing you find online (in reference to the eclipse earthquake theory) is this one: India planetary angular momentum theory.
The problem is, its not exactly the same theory... its not a "solar eclipse" causing the earthquake, its the moon inline with the gravitational pull of the other planets.

Making the simulator

The TGEA model earth would be a basic dts sphere. It would then have some curved meshes (dts objects) mounted to on it to simulate the shifting continental plates. The model earth and moon would respond to real game physics for gravity to simulate an orbit. The dts mesh plates would also respond to the gravitational pull of the sun and moon. In the TGEA simulation, the sun could simply be be a fixed gravitational spot (and source of light).

some plates are known to be on top, and others to be on the bottom where they meet, so this is kind of important. To do it right, the tectonic plate meshes would need to have collision detection much better than a simple bounding box. It can't be built to actual scale (distance between a scaled down version of the earth and moon is too great for a basic TGEA map), and the physics can only approximate the real pull... but a basic approximation of the theory could be done.

Climate Change: There is a solution... Pass it on!


The global wind energy industry has launched a new public awareness campaign called "Wind Power Works. Pass it on" which aims to catalyze wide spread support for wind energy and call on policy makers to commit to significant carbon emissions reductions to combat climate change.

As the countdown to Copenhagen continues and fears grow that the Climate Summit will not make the deep cuts in carbon emissions required, the new campaign sounds a more positive note.

Launched on the Global Wind Day (15 June), the campaign urges people all round the world to generate the power of change and to send a message to world leaders that they can make the deep cuts needed and still power the world.

The 'Wind Power Works. Pass it on' campaign involves downloading a virtual wind turbine onto users' desktops to show their support for wind energy and deep emissions cuts. These turbines will demonstrate how many homes can be powered and how much CO2 can be saved through wind energy.
The more wind turbines downloaded, the stronger the call to world leaders to agree the reductions necessary to avert climate change and to make wind energy part of the solution.

Steve Sawyer, Secretary General of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) said, "We have the technology to transform the global energy system, and we can do so rapidly. That's an important message for our leaders to hear so that they commit to making the cuts so desperately required, and we want it delivered in the strongest terms possible."

Wind power is the only clean technology which is ready now and which can be immediately and rapidly deployed virtually anywhere in the world. It is already the fastest growing new generation source both in Europe and the US, and has the capacity to provide up to 12% of the world's energy needs by 2020, saving over 10 billion tons of CO2 in the process.

The campaign is also supported on Facebook and Twitter and encourages people to start their own virtual wind farms or join existing ones and to pass the idea on. TN Wind Energy Target short by 100million units



Chennai, May 17 Electricity generation from wind mills installed in Tamil Nadu fell sharply to 16.71 million units on Saturday, compared with 34.72 million units the previous day. On Thursday, the windmills in the State generated a record 41.16 million units — the highest so far this season (summer).

Tamil Nadu has installed wind power capacity of 4,126 MW, which is over 70 per cent of the wind power capacity in the entire country.

The State has always been handsomely rewarded for using this resource.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) had targeted to get 484 million units of electricity from the wind mills. By May 16, it has got 384 million units.

However, given the fickleness of wind-electricity, one has to keep one’s fingers crossed.

Power hungry





Tamil Nadu has been reeling under acute power shortage and the TNEB has been able to keep (scheduled) load shedding at levels between 900 MW and 1,050 MW only by purchasing power at very high costs from other States, mainly Chhattisgarh.

The industries in the State suffer a four-hour power cut, between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., but many manufacturing units complain of intermittent, unannounced power outages.

In an informal meeting on March 31, Tamil Nadu’s Electricity Minister, Mr Arcot N. Veerasami, had said the power cut would be off from May 10, when wind power would have started to kick-in.

Wind power generation began earlier this year, thanks to good winds, but there has been no respite from power cuts.

ONGC to step up investment in non-conventional energy sources

Hyderabad, May 13 Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) is in the process of stepping up investments in the next two-three years to tap into the huge non-conventional energy sources, while focusing on extracting more out of new shallow and existing deepwater wells.

The Director (Exploration), ONGC, Dr D.K. Pande, told Business Line that the work on exploiting coal bed methane (CBM), gas hydrates and coal gasification, along with wind and solar energy sources, will see an initial investment of about Rs 500 crore.

“In fact, once we finalise a contract, we will be able to sell CBM,” Mr Pande said.

“The Rs 500-crore investment will cover solar energy and possibly uranium extraction. While the Jharia mines will produce CBM, the gas hydrates project is being taken up in partnership with IIT, Kharagpur,” he explained.

Asked if work on deepwater wells had slowed down, Dr Pande said: “Availability of rigs has been a major constraint. We expect to firm up rigs during the year and begin work in the deepwater wells of Cauvery basin, Krishna-Godavari basin, Andaman and in the Konkan region in Kerala. We expect to speed up work at Cambay and in Assam.” “Significantly, according to estimates, there is huge untapped potential in the shallow and marginal wells. While ensuring that the existing wells sustain their production, the focus will be on tapping into shallow water wells,” he said.

While the CBM production is likely to be about 5,000 cubic metres, the gas hydrates project will be operational within two years.

Work is also under way for the underground coal gasification project in Rajasthan wherein ONGC is spending up to Rs 100 crore. In partnership with Schlumberger in Dehradun, he said the project mandate covers shared gas.

Referring to the potential to tap solar and wind energy, Dr Pande said that the corporation is generating 15 MW at Mangalore and is working on a solar energy project.

Energy consumption
Earlier, delivering a lecture on Hydrocarbon Exploration Riding Technology Wave at the National Geophysical Research Institute, Dr Pande said that the energy consumption patterns are poised for major changes over the next three decades. Dr Pande said new 4D seismic surveys combined with visualisation facility will help expedite exploration work.

Elecon Engg to invest Rs 100 cr in windmill biz,expects 20% growth

Ahmedabad, May 15 Elecon Engineering Company Ltd, leading materials handling equipment, industrial gears and transmission products manufacturer, said it expected to grow by 20 per cent with sales target of Rs 1,150 crore, including around 8 per cent from exports, in 2009-10.

Elecon’s average growth over the last three fiscals was 32 per cent.

The company is investing nearly Rs 100 crore in the windmill gear business and foraying into manufacturing 1-2 MW capacity wind mill gear boxes as an import substitute, said Mr Prayasvin Patel, Chairman and Managing Director of the Vallabh Vidyanagar-based company, here. The company is also developing a wind farm at Narayan Sari in Kutch where it has bought land.

However, the wind energy business being a risky proposition due to unpredictability of wind, dependability on subsidies and other factors, this endeavour would continue to be only a part of Elecon’s business.

“We don’t want to become a major player in the wind mill business,” he added.

As on March 31, 2009, Elecon Engineering, which leads its sector with 26 per cent market share, had an order book of Rs 200 crore, including Rs 24 crore from international companies while its unexecuted order value was Rs 1,627 crore. Export order booking and invoicing target for gear division during 2009-10 is around Rs 90 crore and Rs 50 crore, respectively.

The company has received business-related inquiries worth Rs 3,000 crore.


Currently it is manufacturing two large marine gear boxes for the Indian Navy’s ambitious first indigenously-made aircraft carrier at Cochin Shipyard with delivery expected in the next six months.

In 2008-09, the company’s sales revenues were Rs 955.06 crore (Rs 826.43 crore). Its PAT was down to Rs 57.45 crore (Rs 67 crore) due to high interest rates and volatility of foreign exchange market, among other factors. The company is paying 75 per cent dividend, as in the last fiscal, Mr Patel added.

Advanced experiment is to make wind turbines more efficient and quiet


Tjæreborg Enge, 10 kilometres south of Esbjerg, is going to set the framework for some of the most advanced wind turbine experiments ever seen. A blade from one of the wind turbines in Tjæreborg Enge is removed and replaced with a test blade that has advanced measuring equipment. The measurements on the new test blade begin in May and aim at making the wind turbines of the future more efficient and quiet.


The experiments are going to provide an accurate picture of how the wind acts around a cross-section of a wind turbine blade. These air currents can be calculated and the calculations can be used for designing new blade profiles. Unfortunately the calculation models are not quite accurate, so a piece of the newly designed blade will have to be tested inside a wind tunnel. But these measurements are not entirely accurate either. For in the wind tunnel the blade is standing still during the measurements, while the blade rotates in real life, just as the atmospheric wind is different than the flow inside a wind tunnel. Moreover, the blade is elastic and therefore it moves. All these uncertainties will become significantly smaller because of the new experiments.

LM Glasfiber has produced the blade
The advanced test blade has been produced by LM Glasfiber. Seen from outside it looks like the blades that are already attached to the wind turbine. However, it carries measuring devices. More than 300 measurement points will be read 30 to 100 times per second and some of them up to 50,000 times per second. The only visible thing on the blade is 4 small pipes, pointing out from the front edge of the blade. They measure the wind which hits the blade on the place where the blade has a number of small holes (1 mm in diameter) making it possible to measure the pressure distribution on the blade.

The measurements will take 3-4 months starting in May 2009, after the test blade has been attached to the wind turbine. The measurements will be made in series lasting 3-4 days. When there are no ongoing measurements on the turbine, it will stand still or rotate quite slowly in order to protect the instruments. There will be no measurements during rainy or humid weather, as it may cause damage to the instruments.

Noise measurements
In periods noise measurements are carried out on the wind turbine, as the test programme also includes basic conditions concerning noise from wind turbines.

Finally, a few times laser beams will be used to measure the wind conditions. The laser system is a so-called LIDAR instrument, which is able to measure the wind speed at a point far from the instrument by means of a thin laser beam. This means that when placed on the ground the instrument can make measurements high above where the blades are rotating. A LIDAR throws a beam into the air and is not of any danger to humans or animals in the area.

Cooperation among Vestas, Siemens, LM, DONG Energy and Risø DTU
The research project ”Experimental rotor- and profile aerodynamics on MW wind turbines” is supported by the Danish energy research programme EFP-2007. The major Danish industries within wind energy take part in this project and support it financially. Participants in the project are Risø DTU, Vestas, Siemens, LM and DONG
Energy.

இந்த வருசமும் என் ஓட்டு போச்சு என்று புலம்பி கொண்டிருந்தவனையும் மிஞ்சும் அளவுக்கு புலம்பினான் இன்னொருவன்... உனக்கு பரவாயில்ல... ஓட்ட "சுவாஹா" பண்ணி உன்னை காப்பத்திட்டாங்க... எங்க நிலைமைய பாரு... நடக்குற கொடுமையெல்லாம் பார்த்துட்டு எந்த பொணந்திண்ணிக்கு ஓட்டு போடுறதுனு தெரியாம தவிச்சு கிட்டு இருக்கோம்.

இப்பத்தான் மொதமொத ஓட்டு போட வாய்ப்பு வந்திருக்கு... ஆனா இங்கே யாருக்கு ஓட்டு போட்டும் மக்களுக்கு பயனில்லை... ஓட்டு வாங்குறவ குடும்பத்து பிள்ளைகளுக்குதான் பயன் என்பது தெளிவா தெரிஞ்ச பிறகு ஓட்டு உரிமை மட்டும் எதுக்குனு தோணுது அண்ணே...

அந்த கொடுமைய விடுப்பா... அரை மணி நேரத்தில மூணு தடவ... தாங்க செஞ்சதா... தம்பட்டம் போடுற விளம்பரங்களின் கொடுமை தாங்கலப்பா... என்றபடி ஓடி வருகிறார் வீட்டில் டி.வி. பெட்டியை பார்த்து கொண்டிருந்தவர்.

ஓசியில... டி.வி வாங்குறப்ப யோசிக்கனும்... இப்ப புலம்பி என்ன செய்ய... அண்ணே... எங்க வீட்டுல இருக்கிறது... நான் சம்பாதித்து வாங்கினதுதானே,,,, ஆனா இருக்கிற சேனலெல்லாம் அவங்கது தம்பி... அத மறந்திடாதே!

RISO: PhD scholarship at the Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division

Degradation mechanisms on LSCF cathodes

Do you want to help develop innovative and environmentally friendly energy technologies for the future?

The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risø DTU is among the world’s research leaders in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) – a technology for clean and efficient conversion of chemical energy (in the form of, e.g., natural gas, hydrogen, biogas, ammonia or methanol) into electricity and heat. In addition we have activities within a number of related topics in functional ceramics, including high-temperature electrolysis, oxygen and hydrogen separation membranes, electrochemical flue gas purification and magnetic refrigeration.

Strontium and iron co-doped lanthanum cobaltite (LSCF, La1-xSrxCo1-yFeyO3-δ) is a mixed oxygen ion and electron conductor. LSCF shows good conductivity and electro-catalytic activity at T < 700 oC and is recognized as a promising cathode material for low temperature SOFCs which are currently being developed by many consortia around the world. However, the LSCF cathode degrades over extended periods of time. The origin of the degradation is unclear at the moment.

Project description
The project aims to identify the chemical and the structural degradation mechanisms of the LSCF cathode under realistic environmental conditions. The focus will be the phase stability of LSCF itself and its chemical compatibility with other SOFC components. Self-consistent thermodynamic databases of the relevant systems will be built up utilizing the CALPHAD method. Theoretical thermodynamic calculations and model electrochemical experiments will then be conducted to clarify the major degradation mechanism of the LSCF cathode. This project will be done in close collaboration with Topsoe Fuel Cell A/S.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, materials science or similar
Preferably experience with one or more of the following techniques:
o Materials characterization using XRD and SEM/EDX,
o Chemical thermodynamics
o Electrochemical characterisation
o CALPHAD modeling
Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group
Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
