Nordex bags 90 MW contract
Nordex AG is making steady progress in Turkey. After opening a local company based in Istanbul in April this year, Nordex has bagged “a firmly financed contract for a total volume of 90 MW”.
Starting in winter 2009, Nordex will be constructing the Brahma wind farm comprising 36 N90/2500 turbines for power station operator Bilgin Enerji.
The company said Bergama will be the largest Nordex wind farm in Turkey and one of the largest in the country. In all, 36 wind turbines are being installed at heights of up to 650 meters, where high wind speeds averaging around 9 m/s prevail.
Norded shared that the Turkish company will be calling down the turbines under the terms of a master contract signed with Nordex in spring 2008 and providing for a total volume of 210 MW. It has additionally booked a premium service package.

Taregna in Bihar best place to see solar eclipse: NASA
PATNA: More than a thousand years after astronomer Aryabhatta (or Aryabhatha, 476-550 AD) set up a camp to study movement of stars, all roads
lead to the same Taregna village this year to witness the total solar eclipse, the longest in the 21st century, on Wednesday.
'Taregna', the name of the village about 30 kms south of Bihar capital Patna, has a startling phonetic similarity with 'tare ginna', the Hindi equivalent of 'counting of stars'.
The village, adjudged the best place to view the celestial phenomena by the NASA, was expected to host about two lakh scientists, researchers and 'astro-tourists' from across the globe to witness the eclipse.
The duration of the eclipse in Taregna will be 3 minutes 48 seconds. However, the maximum duration of the eclipse would be six minutes 38 seconds, as visible from the Pacific Ocean.
Divisional Commissioner Sunil Barthwal said the state government would provide the visitors with all facilities.
The scientists said they would be studying atmospheric ionization, geomagnetism, asteroids, animals and avian behavioural changes as well as impact on micro-organisms during, before and after the eclipse.
The scientists were also expected to discover asteroids, which existed only in the world of hypothesis, they said.
Most of the rooms in the hotels in Patna have been booked in advance by the scientists, researchers and tourists. Teams of experts from Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE), a Delhi based NGO, and NASA, are also reaching here, officials said.
The Patna planetarium is receiving heavy rush for buying special spectacles at Rs 20 per piece as people don't want to miss the opportunity, sources said.
Tour operators have made special arrangements to cash in on this occasion and have already received a overwhelming response.
Cox and Kings, the reputed travel agency, has claimed that a group of both amateur astronomers and others have booked a Boeing-737 for the two-hour journey from Delhi to Gaya in Bihar, specially to watch the solar eclipse which will begin at 5.30 am and last for about two hours.
But there is also a cloud of uncertainty. Scientists were concerned about the visibility of the cosmic event as it is monsoon and whether the horizon would be cloud free during the time of the eclipse, just after sunrise, in Indian locations like Taregna.
According to legends, Taregna had a camp set up by Aryabhatta to watch the celestial bodies. He was probably in Patliputra when he wrote 'Aryabhatiya', his lone work to survive, containing his theories on mathematics and astronomy. The first Indian satellite, launched on April 19, 1975, from erstwhile Soviet Union, was named after the great astronomer.

It is also when there will be sun eclipse. Predicted that it is going 2 be really bad and countries like Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak), Singapore, Maldives, Australia, Mauritius, Si Lanka, India, Indonesia , Philippines are going 2 be badly hit. Quake and Tsunami Predicted July 22 2009
21st century's longest Total Solar Eclipse on 2009 July 22
The solar eclipse that will take place on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 will be a total eclipse of the Sun with a magnitude of 1.080 that will be visible from a narrow corridor through northern India, eastern Nepal, northern Bangladesh, Bhutan, and the northern tip of Myanmar, central China and the Pacific Ocean, including the Ryukyu Islands, Marshall Islands and Kiribati. Totality will be visible in many cities such as Surat, Varanasi, Patna, Thimphu, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Hangzhou and Shanghai, as well as over the Three Gorges Dam. A partial eclipse will be seen from the much broader path of the Moon's penumbra, including most of South East Asia and north-eastern Oceania. This solar eclipse is the longest total solar eclipse that will occur in the twenty-first century, and will not be surpassed in duration until June 13, 2132. Totality will last for up to 6 minutes and 39 seconds, with the maximum eclipse occurring in the ocean at 02:35:21 UTC about 100 km south of the Bonin Islands, southeast of Japan. The North Iwo Jima island is the landmass with totality time closest to maximum.

The eclipse quake theory is as follows, When the gravitational force of the sun and moon are both pulling on a plate that has not had series of recent earth quakes, the extra pull is all that is needed to "pop the seam" and cause a major quake.

6+ Magnitude Quake on July 22 2009 at 3:00PM Local Japanese time. This will be follower by two level 5+ Earthquakes and a Tsunami between 5:00PM and 7:00PM. The tsunami will start out in the pacific ocean (to the South East of Japan ... Along the fault line) and hit all the islands to the south west of Japan, Indonesia and even reach New Zealand. The major quakes will actually be along the fault lines in the Ocean.
the theory that the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon pulling together will do the following things.
1. Lift the tectonic plates
2. Cause the tide to rise more than usual
3. Cause an underground molten magma tide to dip and raise the plates following the water tide.
Taken all the time data from the Nasa eclipse site into an excel spread sheet four the four tectonic plates in the region. assumed an hour delay for each event following the lunar eclipse, and then summed the values. I assumed that the events would last longer for the fluids, water and molten magma than for dry land. and then summed the values four all 4 plates where Japan sits.
The blue path above shows the lunar path that will achieve the full solar eclipse at around 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Red dots show where the solar eclipse will be full.

The theory is based on gravitation pull and the earth's tectonic plates
A solar eclipse means that the moon is blocking the sun. The moon has enough gravitational pull to cause the tides an other natural phenomena on earth. The sun has enough gravitational pull to keep the earth in orbit. The theory is that during a solar eclipse, the moon has the Sun's added pull on the earth's tectonic plates. When the Sun and Moon are together on one side of the planet, they pull together and lift up the earth's tectonic plate, just beneath the eclipse. This causes the plate to shift upward, and then an earth quake when the lifted plate gets the little extra push (lift) it needed to move over its neighboring plate. The theory may be hair brained, or it might actually have some pull to it. (pun intended) I'd like to do a simulator game to find out.

The closest thing you find online (in reference to the eclipse earthquake theory) is this one: India planetary angular momentum theory.
The problem is, its not exactly the same theory... its not a "solar eclipse" causing the earthquake, its the moon inline with the gravitational pull of the other planets.
Making the simulator
The TGEA model earth would be a basic dts sphere. It would then have some curved meshes (dts objects) mounted to on it to simulate the shifting continental plates. The model earth and moon would respond to real game physics for gravity to simulate an orbit. The dts mesh plates would also respond to the gravitational pull of the sun and moon. In the TGEA simulation, the sun could simply be be a fixed gravitational spot (and source of light).
some plates are known to be on top, and others to be on the bottom where they meet, so this is kind of important. To do it right, the tectonic plate meshes would need to have collision detection much better than a simple bounding box. It can't be built to actual scale (distance between a scaled down version of the earth and moon is too great for a basic TGEA map), and the physics can only approximate the real pull... but a basic approximation of the theory could be done.

RISO: Ph.D. in solid state electrochemistry – removal of pollutants from exhaust gasses

The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risø DTU is among the world’s research leaders in solid oxide fuel cells – a technology for clean and efficient production of electricity. In addition we have activities within a number of related topics in functional ceramics, including electrochemical flue gas purification.
Harmful emissions from Diesel fired engines are an increasing environmental problem. While three-way catalytic converters are efficient in removing pollutants from exhaust gasses from petrol fired engines, problems still remain for Diesel engines. An attractive possibility is to use electrochemical cells to remove the NOx and soot. We have recently been granted a major project from the Danish Council for Strategic Research which will address the key issues needed to bring the technology to a proof-of-concept state.
Project description
The aim of the Ph.D. project is to develop new electrode materials for a ceramic electrochemical cell for flue gas purification. Topics include:
synthesis and structural characterization of novel electrode materials, using e.g. X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis
electrical and electrochemical characterization using conductivity measurements, cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy
test and characterization of cells using scanning electron microscopy and mass spectrometry.
Qualifications
Master degree in engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry or similar
strong background in electrochemistry or solid state chemistry
ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group
good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

The DTU Climate Centre at Risø conducts and coordinates interdisciplinary climate-related research including measurement and assessment of climate change, adaptation strategies and mitigation of greenhouse gases. The centre cooperates with leading international and Danish universities and research centres and combines research and application-oriented consultancy offered to authorities and the private sector.
The project
"Global Modelling and Assessment of Energy- and Climate Change Policies".
Global climate change emerges from worldwide GHG emissions over century scales, and very large and fast GHG emission reductions in the energy sector are needed in order to avoid dangerous anthropogenic climate change. The PhD project will include the implementation and further development of a global energy economic model and the application of the model to the assessment of technological options and costs of climate policies in different parts of the world. The project will also include a theoretical and applied assessment of international economic climate change policy mechanisms including tradable emission permits, CO2 taxes, climate finance, and technology transfer. The effectiveness of these different mechanisms will be assessed in the model.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in a relevant topic.

Risø DTU is the first in the world to connect polymer solar cells to the grid

As the first in the world, a strong Danish research and industrial collaboration has connected a polymer solar cell plant to the grid. For a long time Risø’s solar energy programme has been conducting research into polymer solar cells, a cheap alternative to existing silicon-based solar cells. Research is now at such an advanced stage that a demonstration plant has been built at Risø DTU.
From the beginning Risø’s research into solar cells based on polymer materials has had a strong focus on production, demonstration and application. As part of an experiment made in cooperation with the companies Mekoprint A/S and Gaia Solar A/S the polymer solar cells have now been connected to the grid at Risø.
”The demonstration is an excellent example of how cooperation between research and industry promotes technology development and creates the initial basis for implementing new technology in society," says Henrik Bindslev, Director of Risø DTU.
The polymer solar cells for the solar cell plant have been produced in collaboration with Mekoprint A/S, who specializes in “roll to roll” production of flex-print and printed electronics.
After the production of the solar cells – and in collaboration with Gaia Solar A/S - Risø DTU has manufactured large panels upon which the solar cells are mounted. Gaia Solar A / S specializes in module construction of silicon solar cell panels and has built Risø’s polymer solar cells into their design. The panel is placed on a tracker which follows the movement of the sun. The generated power is added to the grid.
Already in June 2008, Risø presented the polymer solar cells at the Roskilde Festival in cooperation with Mekoprint A / S. At that time the price was 4.500 € / W, but a huge effort made the price go down to 22 € / W in January 2009 and further down to 15 € / W in March 2009. At the end of 2009 the price is expected to be 4-5 € / W.
Collaboration with the industry seeks to promote the industrialization of polymer solar cells in Denmark and if this succeeds, polymer solar cells can become a ground-breaking energy technology to be used in Denmark and also for export. With such a goal-oriented effort polymer solar cells can become another Danish sustainable energy technology with tremendous export potential.

A blade from one of the wind turbines in Tjæreborg Enge is removed and replaced with a test blade that has advanced measuring equipment. The measurements on the new test blade begin in May and aim at making the wind turbines of the future more efficient and quiet.
The experiments are going to provide an accurate picture of how the wind acts around a cross-section of a wind turbine blade. These air currents can be calculated and the calculations can be used for designing new blade profiles. Unfortunately the calculation models are not quite accurate, so a piece of the newly designed blade will have to be tested inside a wind tunnel. But these measurements are not entirely accurate either. For in the wind tunnel the blade is standing still during the measurements, while the blade rotates in real life, just as the atmospheric wind is different than the flow inside a wind tunnel. Moreover, the blade is elastic and therefore it moves. All these uncertainties will become significantly smaller because of the new experiments.
LM Glasfiber has produced the blade
The advanced test blade has been produced by LM Glasfiber. Seen from outside it looks like the blades that are already attached to the wind turbine. However, it carries measuring devices. More than 300 measurement points will be read 30 to 100 times per second and some of them up to 50,000 times per second. The only visible thing on the blade is 4 small pipes, pointing out from the front edge of the blade. They measure the wind which hits the blade on the place where the blade has a number of small holes (1 mm in diameter) making it possible to measure the pressure distribution on the blade.
The measurements will take 3-4 months starting in May 2009, after the test blade has been attached to the wind turbine. The measurements will be made in series lasting 3-4 days. When there are no ongoing measurements on the turbine, it will stand still or rotate quite slowly in order to protect the instruments. There will be no measurements during rainy or humid weather, as it may cause damage to the instruments.
Noise measurements
In periods noise measurements are carried out on the wind turbine, as the test programme also includes basic conditions concerning noise from wind turbines.
Finally, a few times laser beams will be used to measure the wind conditions. The laser system is a so-called LIDAR instrument, which is able to measure the wind speed at a point far from the instrument by means of a thin laser beam. This means that when placed on the ground the instrument can make measurements high above where the blades are rotating. A LIDAR throws a beam into the air and is not of any danger to humans or animals in the area.

The research project ”Experimental rotor- and profile aerodynamics on MW wind turbines” is supported by the Danish energy research programme EFP-2007. The Biosystem Division at Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy, DTU wishes to appoint a PhD student within the Bioenergy and Biomass Program.

The title of the project is "Upgrading Fuel Properties of Biomass Fuel and Waste by Torrefaction". The project aims at testing a new concept of thermal upgrading biomass for a more efficient use in power plant co-firing systems. The treatment is a mild thermal treatment so-called torrefaction, which is claimed to have several significant chemical and physical effects on biomass which increases sustainability and save energy in transport, storage, and handling of biomass for large scale power plants applications as well as international biomass trade.
The project will focus on the underlying chemistry of the process, the technical aspects and the potential benefits when applied to relevant Danish biomass and waste fuels.

M.Sc in chemical engineering or mechanical engineering with skills in analytical and experimental methods
Knowledge of physical, chemical and mechanical properties of biomass is desirable, but not a requirement

Two out of six prizes went to Risø scientists at the European Wind Energy Conference
The European Wind Energy Conference, EWEC, is a major event for all those involved in wind energy. Scientists from Risø DTU play a very important role in this conference with posters, introductory speakers and chairpersons. At the end of this year's conference held in Marseilles from 16 - 19 March two of them received prizes for their contributions: One of the four poster prizes went to scientist Andreas Bechmann. Senior scientist Rebecca Barthelmie, who is currently a guest scientist at Risø from Indiana University, received the Academy Scientific Award.
The 2009 European Academy of Wind Energy Scientific Award was given to Rebecca Barthelmie for her outstanding work and achievements on wind flows around wind turbines, particularly large-scale offshore wind turbines. Much of her work has been carried out at Risø DTU where she has been employed several times over the past 16 years.
“I very much enjoy working with people here at Risø. They have a great motivation and work really hard towards one goal – to make wind energy succeed. I feel honored to have received this award, but what drives me is to know that I in my own small way contribute to wind energy’s success as a serious part of the future energy mix, I think that is why I keep coming back,” she says.
Another important task for Rebecca Barthelmie is to be the work package leader of the “Flow and Wakes in complex terrain and offshore”- work package under the EU program Upwind. The work package includes 8 research groups from all over Europe.
Poster on the Bolund experiment with invitation to blind comparison
Andreas Bechmann had one particular thing in mind regarding his poster. It was to tell about some unique measurements of wind in complex terrain conducted by Risø scientists on the small peninsula, Bolund, in Roskilde Inlet in early 2008; at the same time he wanted to invite others to do a blind comparison of their calculation models.
And he succeeded, so well that he won one of four poster prizes on the ground that it described an experiment using quality data, it was an example of good cooperation between industry and research and the results of the project would be made available to an international benchmarking of flow modeling in complex terrain.
"Around the world there are scientists, turbine manufacturers and wind tunnel experts, each with their own modeling program. We now invite them all to test - and afterwards perhaps adjust - their programmes by means of our Bolund results. At the conference we announced all the prerequisites for the Bolund experiment, but kept the measurements secret. Now we challenge others to calculate the wind on the hill, "says Andreas Bechmann, who apart from the poster prize took home with him a large number of business cards from people who wanted to take up the challenge.

RISO : PhD student in meso-scale modeling
PhD student in meso-scale modeling with focus on the atmospheric water vapor profile
Applicants are invited for a PhD student position in the Meteorology Program of the Wind Energy Division at Risø DTU. The Meteorology Program is aimed at basic research in the fields of boundary layer meteorology, assessment of wind resources for power generation and of wind loads on turbines and various other structures.
The project
The Ph.D. student will be employed in a research project concerning the hydrological cycle and surface energy balance and their dependence on land use and climate. He/she will work with a version of the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting model (ARW-WRF), which will include a detailed treatment of the effects of vegetation on the boundary layer. Similar versions of the model are commonly used in the Meteorology program for various wind-resource activities. Model results will be validated against water-vapor profiles from satellite and radiosonde data as well as boundary-layer wind speed data from remote sensing platforms. The study area is the island of Sjælland, Denmark. The WRF modeling results will be important for understanding how the complex land-cover of a real landscape affects the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer. The study should quantify feed-back effects from the atmosphere to the land surface on annual basis and during extreme dry/wet conditions. Furthermore the study will involve evaluation of how land use changes will affect different aspects of the hydrological cycle and the boundary layer structure.
Qualifications
Candidates should hold a master degree in meteorology/physics/ engineering/hydrology or similar educational level, and are expected to have theoretical background in boundary layer meteorology. Knowledge on meso-scale modeling and data analysis of atmospheric observations and satellite Earth observations are an advantage. We favor an open-minded and result-oriented person.
Terms of employment
The PhD position is limited to three years. The PhD study is embedded in a research project with the title “Implementing Earth observations, advanced satellite based atmospheric sounders and distributed temperature sensing for effective land surface representation in water resource modeling” (see project info at http://upscalehydrology.ruc.dk).
Main supervisor is Senior Scientist Ebba Dellwik (Risø DTU) and co-supervisors are Senior Scientists Andrea Hahmann and Charlotte Hasager (also Risø DTU).

RISO: PhD in Polymer Photovoltaics / Polymer Solar Cells
The exploitation of polymer materials for converting sunlight into electricity through polymer solar cells for direct consumption or later usage through external storage are believed to convey several advantages such as light weight, flexibility, environmental friendliness, a low thermal budget, low cost and most notably very fast modes of production by printing techniques. Production issues are slowly starting to be addressed and production of very large area plastic solar cell modules up 1000 square centimetres have been reported. Production experiments have shown that it is highly feasible with existing technology to mass produce polymer solar cells at a very low cost, e.g. by the use of roll-to-roll (R2R) printing techniques. While the operational stability has been addressed an area that has received very little attention is the mechanisms that cause degradation, which are responsible for the inadequate lifetime of polymer solar cells.
The Solar Energy Programme at Risø DTU is among the world’s research leaders in polymer solar cells – a cost-efficient alternative to silicon-based solar cells. The solar cell group is expanding in various scientific directions covering all possible aspects of polymer solar cells. The Solar Energy Programme consists of a dynamical and versatile group of people with a positive team spirit. The PhD student will be a part of the team and focus on degradation mechanisms in R2R produced polymer solar cells with the aim of lengthening the lifetime of R2R-produced polymer solar cells. This is achieved by carefully designed experiments involving R2R-produced samples and state-of-the-art physical and chemical characterization using a suite of analytical techniques such as AFM, SEM, XPS, TOF-SIMS, X-ray reflectometry and ellipsometry.

Controllable rubber trailing edge flap to reduce loads on wind turbine blades

The trailing edge of wind turbine blades can be manufactured in an elastic material that makes it possible to control the shape of the trailing edge. This will reduce the considerably dynamic loads that large wind turbine blades are exposed to during operation.
”Providing the blade with a movable trailing edge it is possible to control the load on the blade and extend the life time of the wind turbine components. This is similar to the technique used on aircrafts, where flaps regulate the lift during the most critical times such as at take-off and landing, "explains Helge Aagaard Madsen, Research Specialist on the project.
However, there is a difference. Whereas on aircrafts, movable flaps are non-deformable elements hinged to the trailing edge of the main wing, this new technique means a continuous surface of the profile on the wind turbine blade even when the trailing edge moves. The reason for this is that the trailing edge is constructed in elastic material and constitutes an integrated part of the main blade.
Robust design of rubber
In 2004 Risø DTU applied for the first patent for this basic technique of designing a flexible, movable trailing edge for a wind turbine blade. Since then there has been a significant development with regard to the project. By means of so-called "Gap-funding" provided by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and by the local Region Zealand it has been possible to develop such ideas into a prototype stage.

Part of the research has been aimed at the design and development of a robust controllable trailing edge. This has now led to the manufacturing of a trailing edge of rubber with built-in cavities that are fibre-reinforced. The cavities in combination with the directional fibre reinforcement provide the desired movement of the trailing edge, when the cavities are being put under pressure by air or water.
“In this project a number of different prototypes have been manufactured with a chord length of 15 cm and a length of 30 cm. The best version shows very promising results in terms of deflection and in terms of the speed of the deflection” says Helge Aagaard.

Inside a wind tunnel
The size of the protype fits a blade airfoil section with a chord of one metre and such a blade section is now being produced and is going to be tested inside a wind tunnel.
The capability of the trailing edge to control the load on the blade section is going to be tested in a wind tunnel. This part of the development process is supported by GAP-funding from Region Zealand.
”If the results confirm our estimated performance, we will test the rubber trailing edge on a full-scale wind turbine within a few years” says Helge Aagaard.

Wind Power Calculator Launched
The Carbon Trust has launched a new online tool to help businesses and consumers considering installing a wind turbine to work out how much power it could generate alongside the cost and carbon savings.
The tool will help ensure small-scale turbines are Installed inlocatlons where they will deliver the most carbon and cost savings.
By inputting a postcode, details about the surrounding landscape and the type of turbine, users can calculate the annual mean wind speed as well as the likely energy generation and carbon savings.
Carbon Trust director of Innovations Mark Williamson said: "In the right location small-scale wind turbines can provide both cost and carbon savings, but anyone considering Installing a turbine should use the new Carbon Trust wind estimator to check before proceeding with actual onsite wind monitoring."

PhD student – climate change effects on soil carbon at Risø DTU
The Biosystems Division at Risø DTU wishes to appoint a PhD student to work within the Ecosystems Programme (ECO). Research in ECO focuses on the interactions between ecosystems, energy production and climate change.
The project
The PhD project concerns long-term climate change effects on dynamics of microorganisms and carbon in the root zone. Climate change including higher temperatures, changed precipitation patterns and elevated atmospheric CO2 is expected to change the intensity and pathways for gains and losses of soil carbon. Previous works have shown that each climate change factor can alter function and composition of soil microbial communities and thereby influence the decomposition of plant litter in the root zone.
The objective of the PhD work is to study carbon dynamics in the root zone as influenced by several years of climatic perturbation to shrub-land vegetation combining extended summer drought, increased temperature and elevated CO2. Your PhD-project will focus on:
Analysis of changes in soil microbial community composition by means of signature PLFA and NLFA compounds
Use of stable isotope analysis to determine the 13C labeling of the signature compounds and thereby to identify the dominant functional groups
Assessment of consequences for ecosystem functioning
Conventional methods to study soil microbial activity and biomass will also be applied. The PhD project is closely linked to CLIMAITE, which is the world’s biggest in-situ experiment to investigate the combined effects of important climate change factors on ecosystem processes and functions (climaite.dk). Co-operation with several other related PhD projects within CLIMAITE is expected.
Qualifications
Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree or graduate in the very near future (documentation for final thesis and date of examination must be enclosed in the application). Background should be in biology, soil sciences or agronomy.
Terms of employment
The PhD position has a three-year duration. The successful candidate will be employed at Biosystems Division, Risø DTU in Roskilde. The project is embedded in the STAiR research program (stair.agrproject.dk). Main supervisor is Prof. Per Ambus (Risø DTU) and co-supervisor is Prof. Iver Jakobsen (Risø DTU) and an associate supervisor at University of Aarhus. Terms of employment will be in accordance with those of the scientific staff of universities. Matriculation as a PhD student will be in accordance with Ministerial Order no. 18 of 14 January 2008 on the PhD programme at Universities. Employment will be as soon as possible and latest by 1 September 2009.

The Wind Day goes global: new website and photo competition launched
The European Wind Day is going global in 2009. On 15 June five continents will be united by events, conferences, parties and contests celebrating and promoting this clean, infinite, no-fuel energy source. To initiate the six month run-up to the event, a wind energy themed photo contest and an all-new website are being launched today.

Last June, over 90,000 citizens joined in with activities taking place across 20 EU countries, from painting competitions for children to energy workshops, organized during the 2008 European Wind Day. 185 wind farms opened their doors for family and information days. This year, EWEA is joining together with the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) to coordinate the Wind Day. “ Wind energy already delivers electricity to millions of people around the world”, said Christian Kjaer, EWEA Chief Executive, “but to fully exploit this available technology more people must be made aware of the huge benefits it offers: energy independence, CO 2 savings, avoided fuel costs, green jobs and many others”.
Steve Sawyer , Secretary General of GWEC added that “wind energy has taken off in many countries around the world, so the time has come to roll out the Wind Day to become a global event. We have to stand united in promoting wind energy to combat climate change and to meet growing energy demand.
